The Summer Day

First of all, NO COMMENTS? No one, in the whole world, wants to mention how awesome my last post was? Come on guys. HUMAN SLINGSHOT!
I don't even want to post anymore pictures, since apparently no one even reads my blog... *sigh* Woe is me.
But I can't stop myself, since I have approximately 1billion adorable pictures from the last week, and you haven't seen a single one yet, and if it's not for you, then it's for me. And my children's future baby book. (aka This blog in print form.)

Okay. Here you go. More shirtless boys eating drippy ice pops. Also, the cutest three year old, probably in the whole world. I love her. She calls me "Backy," and it's my favorite thing ever.

The business of summer: it looks like this.
Trading popsicles after they've been thoroughly licked. Giving yourself "showers" with the hose. Progressively getting more naked as the day goes on.

Here is a poem for you, please read it aloud. (Please, read ALL poetry aloud.)

The Summer Day - by Mary Oliver

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean—
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down—
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

As a previous English major, wanna be poet, hoarder of books, I can say that my collection of Mary Oliver's poems (which I got as a gift when I was a teenager) is one of my favorite anthology of poems. It is unbelievably lovely, even if you're not that into poetry.

"The Summer Day," (above) is probably Mary Oliver's best known poem.
So tell me, what will YOU do, with your one wild and precious life?

I totally read your last blog post, and I thought "My, that looks like epic fun!" And also, "Becky certainly looks lovely dressed up like a human cannonball." And "How adorable are those baby boys!"

But because I don't actually know you, I failed to mention any of those things. So. Now you know. People do read your blog. Even teenagers from Canada. :)
