My hairs

Every few months I start regretting my hair. If it's long, then I want to chop it. If it's short, I want to grow it out.

I want to grow my hair out.

This is a mistake. I know it's a mistake.
After I chopped back down to a pixie cut the last time, I had several women say to me, "I'm so glad you decided to cut your hair off again, it looks SO much better." One woman even said, "I couldn't figure out why you were even trying to grow it out, since it's obviously way better short."

I know it looks better. And I don't have to style it every day, and more importantly - I can continue to shower only once weekly.
I found a picture of myself from last Valentine's Day. I looked so pretty! My hair was so long! It was long enough to curl!
Then, I continued scrolling down through my pictures and I saw another one of me - on a different day that week. And I remembered.
I don't usually curl my hair and look pretty. I usually look like a terrifying zombie.
For some reason, having a pixie cut makes my terrifying zombie-vibe a little less pronounced.

Those are the same people, you guys. And that person is me. Those pictures are only like a day apart.
The picture on the left took HOURS of prep-time. The picture on the right took exactly how much prep-time I want to put into getting ready in the morning: none. Obviously.

I remember now, long hair makes me look baldy and horse-faced. I remember why I have short hair.
I look good with short hair 90% of the time, with little to no effort involved. The rest of the time, I look like a poofy-haired young Justin Bieber, but that's a 10% I'm willing to take.

I'm trying to talk myself into it. I'm rereading {this blog post} that I wrote last year about how my hair SUCKS when it's long. But it's not totally convincing me.  I just look so awesome in the left-hand picture.
Maybe I should start wearing makeup on a daily basis, since I'm definitely wearing make up in that picture.
I just put the boys down for a nap, and was going to use this precious time to make a meatloaf for dinner - but I'm starting to feel like I should use this time to experiment with the make-up that my Santa-Mom put in my stocking.

Yeah. That's a super good use of my time. That's probably what's about to happen.
Shhh, don't tell Travis.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday - Haircuts, round 2

I love you guys. I loved and appreciated all your sweet comments, and the people who sent me texts yesterday. There's something so healing about so many women coming out to say something encouraging - most of whom know exactly how I feel!
I am grateful to you, and grateful for the network of friends (mostly whom I've never met) that I have through this blog.

Anyway. Here are some pictures of my kids getting haircuts!
That poor boy looks like he was in a fight!

The boys were terrified of the clippers once they were on and buzzing, so they held perfectly still - which was awesome.

I still can't decide if I like their new hair or not. Travis doesn't. I do... half the time.

Haircuts

As much as I love my boys' long silly hair... it was getting a bit out of hand.
Even I can admit, it was time for haircuts.
Although, we tried to keep it pretty long. Here are the BEFORE pictures:

Yeah, okay. I admit it. Their hair is TOO long.
I wish it had a bit more wave, then I wouldn't have had to cut it...

Actually, as it is, I didn't cut it. Travis did.

YIKES. We let the boys eat some snacks while we cut their hair, and um... bad decision. I found this messy pile in Grey's lap afterward.
Ewwww.
I'll try to post some AFTER pictures, but by the time we were finished with haircuts, they weren't interested in sitting still any longer.
Ah, well.
It was hard for me to agree to, but I do think they look pretty cute, and hopefully it will grow back soon.

Baby Hair

We have packed the car, and are leaving for San Diego very soon, but first, here's a blog post:

When our babies were babies, Travis used to joke about how soft their hair was.
He would say, "These fine J. Crew sweaters are knit from only the softest, blond baby hair."
And we would all chuckle and be a little grossed out, but also imagine just how soft that sweater would be.
It might be gross. But I also might wear it.
Especially if it smells like babies.

I know it's kind of the style, now, to let your baby boys have long hair. Girlie hair.
And my husband's grandmother constantly says, "You better cut their hair before they look like girls."
I don't want their hair to their shoulders or anything.
But seriously! I CAN'T CUT THEIR HAIR.

I love it. It is probably one of my favorite of their features. They have this swishy, wind-swept, slightly curly, soft, wispy, perfect, invisible on the tips, blond hair. Sometimes it looks a little comb-overy, but I even like that.
It is too cute.
And frankly, I kind of like that it sets them apart from other little boys, especially here, where most people keep their boys' hair in missionary cuts. (Aka, short, well-groomed, and parted to the side.)
Plus, I think their wispy hair makes them look like their daddy.
And goodness knows, that is something to aspire to.

Anyway, you don't need to leave a comment saying "They're your kids, cut their hair how you want!" like I know so many of you will want to.
I already know it.

I do what I want. MMph. (Threatening stance, angry eyes, and "bring it on" gesture, here.)

Pixie dust

I mean, pixie CUT, not dust. Like hair.
Like my hair.
I made Travis be my photographer.

I look like this now:

Becky: Do I look like Peter Pan?
Travis: You always ask that when you have short hair
Becky: Well, I always look a bit like Peter Pan.
Travis: .......
Becky: You're not refuting it! Do I look like Peter Pan then?
Travis: There are lots of versions of Peter Pan. If you're asking if you look like Robin Williams, then no. You don't look like Robin Williams.

My "Hair Lust" album on Pinterest has been misleading me.

Dear self,
Stop trying to grow your hair out long. You do not look like the girls on Pinterest with long hair, you look like yourself with long hair with long hair. You do not know how to do fancy things to your hair, and frankly, my dear - you have twins and no time to learn how to braid upside down and backwards.

Here are the things that you hate about having long hair, stop forgetting them:
1. Your hair is not frizzy, wavy, curly, or interesting in anyway. It is not especially thick or thin, it is merely lank and staticky.
2. THERE IS HAIR EVERYWHERE. It is in the drain of all the sinks and the tub. It is all over the floor. It is collecting in the armpits of sweaters and crotches of sweatpants when you put clothes in the dryer with out a dryer sheet, and sometimes it collects there anyway.
3. Your hair gets all up in your business. It pokes you in the eye, tries to strangle you when the windows are down in the car, and is always in your mouth when you try to eat, kiss, or breath outside.
4. For some reason, your hair breaks. That means that you have a short wispy halo of antennae at all times, waving about in the breeze. It also means that you have a thin, short, second layer of bangs underneath your real bangs.  It looks silly. It looks like you're trying to be Amelie, but without a proper hair technician, only a four-year old with scissors.
5. When you have long hair you have to both wash and style it, or you look like a sloppy stay-at-home mom (which you are). If you have short hair, you look relatively put together and not like a boy, like you think you do. Plus, if you think you look like a boy, then you are encouraged to wear make-up and skirts, which will make you feel better about yourself anyway.
6. Stop watching shows with Zooey Deschanel in them. Your hair and her hair ARE DIFFERENT. When you see her while you have short hair, you will think "I want to grow my hair out, and have it look like that, because it is pretty." Your hair will not look like that when it is grown out. Your hair is flat and staticky. It is too thin for good bangs. It is too undamaged for even the slightest curl.  Need I remind you that you spend AN HOUR curling your hair and it still looks dumb? It will not look like Zooey. It never will, unless you wear a wig. Stop dreaming. Stop growing your hair out.
7. You want to look like pretty high-schoolers from teen dramas. Admit that to yourself, and admit it to the world. You are not on Gossip Girl. You have accomplished more, been more awesome places, and are less superficially pretty than the pretty girls with long-hair from your own old high school. Please, Becky. Stop trying to grow your hair out for people that you do not really care about, and who are probably jealous of you anyway.
8. Your babies pull your hair. ALL DAY LONG. It hurts. It sucks. On a daily basis, you lose a child-sized fist of hair, straight from the scalp. It will not matter that your babies may be two or three-years old when you decide to grow your hair again. Jack pulled Mom's hair until he was like seven, and you'll be having more babies soon enough.

Please, short-haired Becky, do not forget these things when you have short hair. You always forget them. You spend months (YEARS!) growing your hair back out and it is in ugly in-between stages for the majority of that time.
And then summer comes, and your hair is long and you remember that YOU DON'T EVEN LIKE LONG HAIR.
Go get your hair cut, already.
Do not grow it out. It is a mistake.

Love always, long-haired Becky

p.s. You are pretty.
p.p.s. {Here} is my Hair Lust album. I know you're curious now.

Some of my current short-hair inspirations.
I'm going to go take the plunge soon.
Sometime this week!

prideful hair

I am very stubborn.
Prideful, some might say.

If people tell me what to do, my first reaction is to never do those things. You know, out of spite.
If someone says to me, “maybe you should eat healthier, I think “Oh, really? Healthier, you say? Would it be healthier for me to only eat potato chips for the rest of my life? Because thanks to you, that’s my new diet. What now?!”
And then I have to remind myself, “You don’t like potato chips that much. You don’t want to eat them every day.”
But I certainly will not tell that to the person that suggested healthier food to me. I will always eat potato chips in front of them.
You know, out of spite.
I know it’s crazy, but I just hate when people try to tell me what to do. I find myself thinking "It’s not like you're perfect or anything. Focus on your own problems before focusing on mine!"

Anyway, this was a long, and mostly irrelevant way for me to tell you that my hair does the same thing.
Yes. My hair. It hates being told what to do.

I have gotten at least four perms in my day. Possibly more, but I can only think of four specific perms.
I have gotten them in salons, at hair schools, from the home box kit and not one of them has lasted more than three weeks, a month tops.
My hair is like “What? You want me to be curly? MAKE ME. No can do. I suck.”
I have dyed my hair dozens of times. Red, blond, dark brown, black. Even orange, accidently.
I have never looked at my hair, though, and been like “Oh, I can see my roots, time for a redye,” because my hair will not hold color. Usually my new color lasts about a week before I’m back to my regular color. It drives me bonkers!

Lately I’ve been more than a little obsessed with hair. I want my hair to be long again! I’ve started saving pictures of other people’s s hair online. (Which sounds a bit creepy, when you think of it.)
I created an entire new pintrest board to keep all the hair tutorials I run across. I forward them to my sister (who has long curly blond hair) begging her to test them for me.

I keep trying them out on my short hair, but it just doesn't work. Above is what my hair looks like now. The picture on the right is how is dries if I don't do anything to it, but just let it air dry.
What did I tell you? STRAIGHT.
The picture on the left is after I tried {this} hair tutorial. Needless to say, it did not work.

I’m really bad at having the resolve to grow out my hair, and have only managed to have long hair once. First I had to sign a contract with my girlfriend Lauren to not cut our hair for a year or we had to buy the other person something, like an expensive pair of jeans.
Then when Travis and I started dating, I promised myself I wouldn’t cut my hair until we either got married or broke up.
So if we did get married I could have long hair at my wedding, if we broke up I could console myself by getting a new haircut.
Win-win. We got married and I had long hair and managed to go without cutting it for another few months after that.
And then I sheared all of it off to within an inch of my scalp a little over a year ago.
And it has been growly slowly back since then (with no help from me, I might add, since I keep cutting it).

Here's me with short hair and me with long hair. The long hair is pic is the longest it's ever been,  but the short-hair picture is not the shortest my hair has been, amazingly.

Anyway, I have again picked a date (a bit arbitrarily) and am not going to cut my hair until next summer after my high school reunion so I have long hair at my reunion.
And then I can try out these new dos:
