Wonky Sunburst Quilt

I finished Baby Boy's quilt, and I am in love. I think if it was much bigger, then the crazy combination of colors and pattern would be overwhelming, but at about a 40" square, this is just the right size.
I am all heart-eyes looking at it, which explains why I took about one million pictures of a baby blanket.

There was probably nothing about this quilt that is actually quilter-approved. It is extremely imperfect, slightly lumpy, flawed, and wonderful.
I pretty much invented my own method for creating these squares, which I'll share in another post, but it is probably going to be an upsetting post for actual quilters, when they see how careless and sloppy I am in my procedures.
I have some skills in quilting. I think I'm really good at selecting fabric, inventing patterns, and figuring out the math and geometry of said patterns. I am less good at the actual production of quilts. Maybe I'm just too busy and impatient to put in the time necessary.

A glimpse of the back. It's hard to see the quilting on the front, but I wanted it to mirror the front in a starburst shape as well...

Someday I might decide it's worth it to hand-bind. Or maybe, I'll take my hatred of hand-sewing to the grave and all my bindings will be as wonky as the rest of the quilt.

I actually didn't manage to get a picture of the whole back! But you can see how I quilted it here. The back is flannel and this quilt is so snuggly that I may have it wrapped around me right now. I didn't use any rulers or measurements for the back. I hand-drew a star shape on the back with chalk, and then just eyeballed the triangles that expanded from it.

I can't wait until I have a baby to snuggle up in this quilt.
I may not have a single diaper stashed away, or a bottle, or any burp cloths unpacked... but he's got a quilt waiting. And that's what's really necessary.

Becky it is wonderful!!!!! The fact that you made this quilt with your own imagination while busy with the twins is fantastic. I am so proud of you, and who cares if the seams don't match perfectly and the quilting isn't professional. It still looks great. And you are right your color sense is great and the blocks may be wonky but they are fun and colorful. GOOD JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stumbled upon your blog a couple of months ago and I just adore you and your cute boys. This quilt is amazing! I am currently struggling to pick out fabric and a quilt pattern for my niece that's on the way. I totally agree though that the quilt is MOST important.

I love this quilt. Seriously. I am so impressed with your talent even if actual quilters might not be. Do you just sew the lines to get it "quilted" or did you have someone else do it for you? I think your grandma dd it before fore you, maybe? I love the colors you picked too. So bright and beautiful!

You are too funny! The big thing now is making wonky, imperfect quilts. You are right on target! You are blessed with talent in whatever you pursue, plus the self confidence to go your own way. I really love how you quilted it another innovation! Very cool!
