milk

I'm kind of soaking wet, but really really super excited.
Usually I pump milk while holding one of the boys skin to skin, and then switch sides and babies and pump while holding the other boy skin to skin.
They don't breastfeed while I pump, since they're too small to really suck and they haven't quite got the hang of sucking and swallowing at the same time.
BUT today while I was pumping and holding Grey he started rooting around. He would open his mouth as wide as he could, and stick out his tongue and rub his whole face back and forth against my chest.
Occasionally he'd get the corner of my robe or his fingers in his mouth and start sucking with a vengeance.
The nurse noticed what he was doing and had me stop pumping and position him properly to nurse.
He latched on and nursed for like seven minutes. Just a minute or two at a time before he'd get tired or distracted and then he grab hold again and start sucking like crazy!
The nurses usually discourage me from trying to nurse, since it just makes the boys tired and we want them to build up their strength and rest all the time, but after seeing Grey do so well our nurse decided to help Micah try too.
He never roots around while I'm pumping, and doesn't show the slightest interest in nursing, so I was surprised that he latched on and actually nursed for almost fifteen minutes!
I like want to jump around in crazy circles waving my arms, but I'm too tired.
I'm also soaked.
Because the boys both seemed to have really gotten sucking down, but they're not so hot at swallowing.
And Micah was kicking my other breast the whole time he was nursing, and just leaked all over me, but I was too distracted by my good boys to notice and take some precautions.
AH!
It's so awesome!

I feel like such a creep for commenting on every post minutes after you publish them, but I have to say, that's AWESOME! That's the start of my nursing battle I wish I had. I never had enough for both girls so I'm thrilled that you're soaked. Seriously, that's amazing! Good job, mama!

Oh and good job to the boys too. :) Thanks for all the updates. I for one am super, super curious and invested in these boys already.

Yay mommy! Yay babies! You've got some strong, determined boys...Keep it up. Eventually you'll get the hang of tandem nursing and it's a breeze for all of you!

Oh wow, that's the best!!!! I have (just one!) former 29-weeker and I've been exclusively pumping for him since day one. My advice would be to nurse as much as possible while in NICU and to follow up with a lactation consultant asap after you guys go home - definitely two things I would change so I could have actually NURSED my preemie! So excited that I found your blog!
