Moving

Well, it's official. We are moving.
We are probably moving soon, too! Within the next two and a half weeks, soon.

We are moving to a very adorable two-bedroom house, with a fenced in yard, hardwood floors, big windows, and a lovely covered porch. I am really excited, but also... sad and nervous.
I love Provo. I love our neighbors and our friends. I love the small-town feel, and the old-fashioned downtown. I love that the mix of fresh-faced, overly-happy, Mormon college students, and old grandmother types who moved to Provo when they were students and just never left.
I love the fall, and the way that everyone in the whole city seems to be getting ready to go to school.
I love that my current apartment is situated right between the library, a park, the grocery store, and Travis' office and that we can walk to all those places within 10 minutes.

It took me a long time to feel this way about Provo, but now that I do, I don't want to give it up so easily.
I also love having so many friends here. We walk down the street and literally know 90% of the people we pass. When we go to the park or story time at the library, I recognize almost everyone. When we're at church, we have so many friends for us and the boys.
I make friends quickly, (which is such a blessing!) but I'm still not eager to start all over!

I try to make myself feel better about Salt Lake.  Here are the things that I'm excited for:
The lights on Temple Square. We'll be close enough that we can go to see the Christmas lights downtown EVERY NIGHT if I want to.
The zoo. We have yet to go to the zoo, but now we can go all the time! I think the boys will love it!
The Farmer's Market. Apparently, the Salt Lake Market is better than the Provo one, more vendors, more fruits and veggies, and hopefully more often, too! Although I am worried that it will cost more, too....
A YARD AND A HOUSE! Have I mentioned that I'm really excited to be in a house? And I am really excited to have our own big backyard? And that this house is right downtown in Salt Lake, mere miles from everything exciting in the city (While also, hopefully, being out of the actual hustle and bustle? It seems like a nice, quiet neighborhood.)

Our house is a bit smaller than our current apartment, but I think it will be worth it.  Unfortunately, that means that we have to get rid of some things. Today Travis said, "Okay, I'm going to get rid of some of my books...." (he looked pointedly at me) "because we're not going to have a lot of room in our new place."
"Well, I'm not getting rid of ANY OF MY BOOKS!" I said. Then I went into my sewing room, and looked at my books, and touched their smooth covers, and flipped through their pages and smelled their lovely, bookish smell... And I decided that I can get rid of some, because I am a big girl. A grown-up, in fact.
I could get rid of Utopia and The Republic, which are books that I hate, but keep because of their impressive presence on my shelf.
I could get rid of my 8-book Norton Anthology, which I kept in case I ever wanted to flip through them and read them, but who am I kidding?  (On a related note, would anyone like to BUY my Norton Anthology of Literature? Eighth Edition, VERY good quality, because I pretty much never read them.)
I could get rid of books like Snow Falling on Cedars and Going After Cacciatio, which I read in high school and really liked, but have never opened since.
I could get rid of books like Many Waters and Native Son because I have more than one copy of them.
I could get rid of Cat's Cradle and Breakfast of Champions, which I bought because I love so many of Vonnegut's books, but which I couldn't even get half way through.
And lastly, I could get rid of books that were part of sets (like "Poetry for Women" and "Love Poems") which I hated (gag me), but wanted to keep their partner ("English Poetry through the Ages"), without feeling guilty for splitting them up.

And you guys, I now have a very impressive pile of like 25 books that I'm getting rid of. I am really, really proud of myself.

That is the first step towards a successful move. And next I tackle the bathroom cupboards!
Shall I tell you my predictions? I can get rid of expired medicines and vitamins. I can get rid of hair-doing stuffs. (Like a 3-barrel curling iron that I never even used when I had long hair, but kept because I spent so much freaking money on it.) I can get rid of make-up which I've had since high-school and kept in case I ever needed purple mascara and blue eyeshadow for... you know... something. (Dressing up like a hooker?)
But which I have absolutely not worn in like 6 years.

Anyway. If you live in Salt Lake, please leave me a comment! I am going to be looking for friends!
And If you have any more good ideas of things to do in Salt Lake, please tell me! Anything to look forward to is a good thing!

Moving is always so exciting/nerve-wracking. I'm sure you'll get accustomed to SLC in no time. Good luck on the purging and packing. :-)

Hi, my name is Ali Lalor. I was Tessa Pitcher's (she is so wonderful) Laurel advisor. Bishop Picther pointed me to your blog when I was pregnant with my baby boy and living just across the street from them. I enjoy glancing at your blog. Your boys are adorable.

Anyways, about a year ago, we moved to Holladay. I wasn't sure about the move either, but seriously, I LOVE Salt Lake. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what I love about it so much, but I think I will live here forever, and I am very happy about that thought.

Salt Lake has great restaurants, tons of parks, is close to Park City, Snowbird, beautiful canyons, and on and on and on. The Farmer's Market is really great. The people are really great. I also really love all of the old neighborhoods and mature trees-especially in Holladay.

And lastly, when I lived in Orem/Provo, I felt like people just lived there while they were going to school. We had some many friends come and go, which was kind of difficult. In SLC, It seems like people are here to stay!

Long comment. Good luck moving.

I live in Sandy, but work in Salt Lake. I love it! There is a lot to do from shopping at the new City Creek Mall, to hiking in the canyons (that are just up from my street), to downtown Jazz and Bees games, and so on. The possibilities are endless.

Good luck with the move! Moving is always an exciting new adventure. You'll do great. I'm so glad that you were able to find a place that will suit you alright.

Much love!

Lived in Salt Lake all of my life. I have been a nanny for a number if years and Salt Lake has so many baby/kid fun things to do. I'm sure you will love the downtown Library, the Children's museum at the Gateway! I would get a pass to that and the zoo and go when all of the big kids were in school. Liberty Park has Tracy Aviary, the mini canyons water feature, multiple playgrounds, paddle boats and feeding the ducks on the pond, a ferris wheel, if you have seen the movie Charly, you'll recognize it, little cars and a carousel. The zoo has really improved and looks more and more like Disneyland/California Adventure. So many pools fountains and splash pads Murray City pool is a great one! Close to mini waterfall hikes up Cottonwood canyons. Stroll around Silver Lake! It's all beautiful. So many story times we would go to a few a week with all the different libraries and then try new neighborhood parks. You're probably (I'm assuming if you're living downtown) close to memory grove, which is a beautiful park during all seasons, that has some trails that take you up into the trees. Easy enough for littles to walk and explore. And the Children's Theater puts on darling performances. So many things to do, I would buy the Utah Mamas Handbook and google children's (or just events) that are going on, you won't be disappointed.

Hi! I've been meaning to comment. I just found your blog a few weeks ago. I live in Holladay and I have a 2 year old girl and 3 month old twin boys. We lived downtown when my daughter was born! Not in the good part of downtown though - more like the scary ghetto. We love Holladay, but it was really fun being close to everything downtown. I grew up in Orem so moving to SLC was a big change, but I'm used to it now! I miss how simple the street layout was down south, Salt Lake has some crazy streets that I get lost on all the time. I'll be on the lookout for you and your cute boys :)

Also, I am guilty of keeping the crazy bright make-up from high school. I get it out every halloween and have a blast. So if you're ever regretting tossing yours and need to borrow mine - let me know!

The yard sale is a great idea. I usually donate items to Goodwill during our spring cleaning time.

BECKY. I am moving downtown in a few weeks, all by my lonesome for the first time. I think this is a sign.

Becky, I live in Murray, and even though I'll admit I didn't like it for the first few months, now I love it. I would suggest taking your kiddos to the amazing library programs they have. Also, Liberty Park is fun. There are fields and ducks and ponds and a little water fountain rock play area for kids and paddle boats. It's the perfect spot for a picnic. And really, you can't go wrong with the LDS Children's museum. And if you need some stay at home mom interaction, there's a mom's club in my ward that you would be more than welcome to come to :)
